About the Department

The Department of Structural Engineering is an independent unit at the Faculty of Civil Engineering whose education and research work is focused on structural design. The Department is chaired by professor Jan Kubica and is composed of 20 employees, including 4 full professors, 3 university professors, 11 assistant professors and 1 assistant.

During the evaluation period (2016-2021), the scientific achievements of the employees of the Department of Structural Engineering include 378 publications, including 63 publications from the Impact Factor (IF). The total number of points according to the list of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education is 10603, while the total IF: 235.54. Education

We educate students in the field of designing building and engineering structures, mainly reinforced concrete structures, prestressed concrete structures and timber structures, of various functions, at all 3 levels of higher education (undergraduate, MSc and PhD). We conduct courses in Polish and English.

Research

We conduct scientific research in the following fields: basic research (concrete, masonry, timber, glass), applied research (reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, masonry joints, CFRP and SRP reinforced concrete, glass structures) and commercial (technical) services.

On-going research projects:

  • "Sustainable Building Lime Applications via Circular Economy and Biomimetic Approaches" (SUBLime), HORIZON 2020, (2022-2024), total budget 3 712 000 Euro (455 000 Euro for Silesian University of Technology);
  • "Biomimicry and carbon adsorbent eco-materials for a climate-neutral economy" (CSTO2NE), HORIZON TMA MSCA Staff Exchange, (2023-2026), total budget 1 030 400 Euro (151 800 Euro for Silesian University of Technology);
  • "Integrated Porous Cementitious Nanocomposites in Non-Residential Building Envelopes for Green Active/Passive Energy Storage" (NRG-STORAGE), HORIZON 2020, (2020-2024), total budget 6 846 750 Euro (313 976 Euro for Silesian University of Technology).
