Research profile

The Department of Theory, Architectural Design and History of Architecture (RAr3) conducts research that combines historical and theoretical reflection with design practice and conservation-oriented work. Its academic activity focuses on understanding the processes through which buildings and architectural ensembles develop and transform, as well as on developing methods for the protection and responsible upgrading of heritage assets.

Architectural heritage and conservation practice

A strong strand of RAr3’s research concerns cultural heritage—particularly regional heritage, including modernism and the architecture of the second half of the twentieth century—as well as conservation and adaptive re-use. The team carries out archival queries, analyses of documentation and on-site investigations, prepares expert opinions and conservation guidelines, and studies the potential for transformation and adaptation of historic buildings, including post-industrial and sacred architecture.

Digital documentation and advanced research methods

Research is supported by modern digital tools used for diagnosis and recording of the built environment, such as photogrammetry, laser scanning, 3D modelling and thermography. In parallel, the department develops work related to documentation and dissemination of heritage, including research on archival resources and methods for recording the intangible dimensions of the architectural environment.

Green transformation, performance and inclusive design

An important area of activity lies at the intersection of architecture, the environment and quality of life: the optimisation of energy-efficient and pro-environmental solutions, including urban rainwater retention and management systems, as well as the assessment and improvement of accessibility for people with specific needs. The theme of green transition is also pursued through projects addressing the modernisation of late twentieth-century architectural heritage in response to environmental and climate challenges.

Collaboration and international engagement

RAr3 delivers projects with local, national and international reach, working with academic institutions, local authorities and heritage-protection bodies. The department develops ongoing cooperation with conservation services and international partners, and—through international programmes—builds long-term research networks that support collaborative studies and the exchange of experience.
