3 x I miejsce dla High Flyers na zawodach Droniada 2021!

The team of the High Flyers research club, one of the supervisors of which is an employee of the Faculty of Chemistry, dr hab. Eng. Marcin Lemanowicz, prof. SUT won the first place in 3 categories during this year's Droniada, which took place in Poznań at the EPPG Kąkolewo airport.

Since 2014, Droniada shows the technological possibilities of industry 4.0, with particular emphasis on drones, robotics, ICT, geoinformation, information analysis systems, electronics and aviation. Academic and Open teams take part in the competition, and they can present their solutions to potential investors in practice. Scenarios of competition tasks are based on "life" situations in which drones can provide real support.

This year's edition of the competition was aimed at preparing young staff to support environmental protection and precision farming. This year the competition took place on June 28-03.07 in Poznań at the EPPG Kąkolewo airport, and the Silesian University of Technology was represented by the Interdepartmental Scientific Circle  "High Flyers" composed of: Izabela Stępień, Jacek Grzybowski, Paweł Piórkowski, Dawid Rudy, Jakub Tomczak, Jakub Zeifert , Krzysztof Lewandowski and Marcel Król. This year's competition included three competitions: presentation of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), identification of areas occupied by plant disease pathogens ("Three colors" competition) and detection of scab and apple mildew in the orchard, followed by their precise spraying with plant protection products simulated by paintball balls ( "Tree of Life" competition). The High Flyers team won respectively:

  • 2nd place - for the presentation of UAV,
  • 1st place - in the "Three colors" competition,
  • 1st place - in the "Tree of Life" competition.

Thanks to this, our team in the general classification won the first place and received the Main Prize in the amount of 20 thousand. PLN, funded by the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center and two Special Awards of 2.5 thousand PLN from the Łukasiewicz Research Network - Institute of Aviation.

The second place went to the AKL team from the Wrocław University of Technology, while the third place was taken by the AGH Drone Engineering team from Krakow. Congratulations!

“It should be emphasized that for the first time in the history of Droniada, one of the teams successfully completed the mission in the growing rain. These are High Flyers, thus proving that it has met one of the regulations regarding the readiness to take off the drone in a 15-minute drizzle. At the same time, all six teams that took part in the field competitions coped quite well with the strong wind and showed cold blood in emergency situations such as Poznań University of Technology and SkyCrew. " - inform the competition organizers on their website https://www.5zywiolow.pl/wyniki-konkursu-technologicznego-droniada-2021/#

We would like to thank the organizers for the great atmosphere and the competing teams for their fierce fight!

People involved in the preparations: Michał Nerwiński, Łukasz Ungier, Jakub Świętek, Szymon Nowacki.

Supervisors of the High Flyers science club: dr hab. Eng. Roman Czyba, prof. PŚ (Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science), dr hab. Eng. Marcin Lemanowicz, prof.
