Should we be afraid of physics? – this was the motto of the third edition of the Scientific Conference for Children and Youth at the Silesian University of Technology. During the event, secondary school pupils from all over Poland presented their presentations on topics related to physics. The event was organized by the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation and the Institute of Physics.

The conference was attended by pupils from all over Poland who are interested in physics and wanted to share their knowledge with experts and colleagues from other schools. Their presentations were evaluated by scientists, experts and business representatives. This is the third edition of this event.

– I am glad that the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation has taken such an initiative, encouraging young people to try to face science. Previous editions have shown that this event enjoys great interest - said Vice-Rector for Science and Development - prof. Marek Pawelczyk.

This year's edition of the conference was organized jointly with the Institute of Physics of the Silesian University of Technology. “We want to encourage pupils to learn science. The very title of the competition " Should we be afraid of physics?" shows that physics is not something to be feared. We want the outcome of the conference to be a clear and legible answer: physics is not something to be afraid of. It is presented as something difficult, but in fact, if we approach it properly, it is not that difficult - emphasized Dr. hab. Eng. Adam Michczyński, professor of the University of Silesia, director of the Institute of Physics.

The competition was entered by secondary school pupils - physics enthusiasts, not only from Silesia, but also from Lesser Poland and even from Bydgoszcz. – Participants were given questions prepared by a group of our scientists. During the Conference, we will evaluate their presentations - explained Dr. Eng. Aneta Grodzicka from the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation.

– For the participants we have prepared issues that concern physics in everyday life. For example, optical phenomena in nature, physics in sports, music. There were also questions related to green energy, nanotechnology or fibre optics - added Dr. Eng. Justyna Juszczyk-Synowiec from the Institute of Physics.

This year's Scientific Conference for Children and Youth was attended by almost 350 pupils.
