This year, the event was enriched by awarding three outstanding scientists with the title of Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology.

Jak przypomniał rektor prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, godność Honorowego Profesora Politechniki Śląskiej jest przyznawana przez Senat Uczelni – wybitnym uczonym i nauczycielom akademickim, którzy swoją postawą, działalnością i zaangażowaniem przyczyniają się do budowania prestiżu i rozwoju Politechniki Śląskiej.

As recalled by Rector Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk, the title of Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology is awarded by the University Senate to outstanding scholars and academic teachers whose attitude, activities and commitment contribute to building the prestige and development of the Silesian University of Technology.

The distinctions were awarded to:

- Prof. Wojciech Nowak from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, expert in the field of energy

- Prof. Jan Taler from the Cracow University of Technology, expert in the field of energy

- Prof. Jerzy Świder of the Silesian University of Technology, expert in mechanical engineering.

The annual doctoral promotions take place around the time of the Silesian University of Technology celebration, which falls on the 24th of May. It is one of the most important events in the scientific life of the academic community.

‘Since its foundation in 1945 until the 30th of April this year, the Silesian University of Technology has promoted 5105 doctors, and 1148 people have been awarded the academic degree of doktor habilitowany (post doctoral degree)’ stated the rector. This year, 16 people received the degree of doktor habilitowany and 66 people the doctoral degree.

‘These promotions are a confirmation of the next step taken by you on the not easy path of your professional development and academic career. I sincerely congratulate you on this success, as I know that it involves a lot of effort and sacrifice’ Prof. Mężyk told the audience.

The Rector also expressed his appreciation for the work of the attendees and thanked them for their contribution to the development of the Silesian University of Technology. ‘We are on the eve of the announcement, by the Minister of Education and Science, of the results of the evaluation of the quality of scientific activity in individual scientific disciplines, which consist mostly of the results of your hard scientific work’ he pointed out.

Prof. Mężyk also thanked the doctoral students’ supervisors for their support and assistance. He also addressed words of gratitude to their closest ones. ‘Scientific successes are achieved also, and perhaps above all, thanks to the understanding and support received from our closest ones’ emphasised the rector.

The ceremony was attended by the university authorities: Rector Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk and the following: Vice Rector for Collaboration with the Civic and Economic Environment Prof. Janusz Kotowicz, Vice Rector for General Affairs Prof. Bogusław Łazarz, Vice Rector for Science and Development Prof. Marek Pawełczyk, Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Education Prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz, Vice Rector for Infrastructure and Promotion Prof. Tomasz Trawiński.

After the oath, the doctors received their diplomas from the hands of the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology.

One of the participants of the doctoral promotion was Agnieszka Piórkowska PhD, from the Faculty of Architecture. ‘Today's ceremony is a very solemn and exceptional moment, crowning years of effort involved in preparing the dissertation. Recent years have separated us from such events, so it is even more pleasant to be able to participate in such a ceremony’ she said. The subject of her research is related to her long-standing passion for dance theatre and its architecture. She intends to continue this research.

Also Jakub Nalepa, PhD, DSc, from the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science, emphasised that the doctoral promotion ceremony was an important point summing up the great work that each of the participants had had to do. ‘The work connected with habilitation proceedings cost me a lot, but it was a pleasant effort’ he added. His research includes issues related to medical imaging and satellite imaging; he intends to continue it.
