The Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science carries out scientific research essentially in the fields of:

  • automatic control and robotics
  • electronic and telecommunication
  • computer science

 

Research regarding those three areas is conducted within 3 respective Institutes of our Faculty.

 

Institute of Automatic Control

Scientific research carried out at the Institute of Automatic Control mainly concerns automatic control and robotics, metrology, modelling, analysis of signals and systems, as well as biotechnology and bio-cybernetics, taking into account both theoretical and practical aspects.

 

Division of Control and Robotics conducts scientific research on:

  • Control systems in the conditions of incomplete information
  • Models and algorithms for control of various structures
  • Design and construction of control systems for unmanned flying objects UAV
  • Design of regulation and control systems 
  • Design and study of mobile robots
  • Intelligent industrial robots – control, navigation, sensoric systems and interfaces
  • Utilization of artificial intelligence methods in robotics.

 

Division of Automatic Devices and Systems focuses on the area of:

  • Modelling, simulations and control of industrial continuous processes
  • Theory and practice of modelling and simulation
  • Real time simulation, together with training application
  • Modelling, simulation and control of biotechnological processes in environmental protection: processes containing active settling, sequential settled reactors, processes utilizing bio-filters
  • Process dynamics
  • Intelligent automatic devices: transducers, executive devices, regulators and controllers 
  • Distracted systems of control
  • Programming digital regulators, controllers, monitoring and SCADA systems
  • Cheap control systems based on personal computers

Institute of Electronics

Scientific research of the Institute of Electronics mainly concerns electronic devices and systems, using modern type measuring, computational and programming systems, taking into consideration both theoretical and practical aspects.

 

Division of Biomedical Electronics conducts research on:

  • Bio-cybernetics and biomedical engineering  – information transfer in medicine
  • Design and construction of electronic medical apparatus, electronic devices for data acquisition and biologic signal amplifiers
  • Development of a new type of nanostructured conductive oxides for gas sensors with potential environmental and biomedical application.

 

Scientific research of the Division of Theory of Circuits and Signals concentrates on the aspects of:

  • Computer aided analysis and design of electronic systems
  • Digital Signac conversion for design of digital filters and their application
  • Analysis, synthesis and optimization of neural networks and their application in engineering practice
  • Aiding the teaching process using information technologies.

 

Division of Fundamentals of Electronics and Radioelectronics carries out scientific research in the fields of:

  • Methods of calculations for electromagnetism
  • Numerical modelling of objects of radiant and distracting electromagnetic waves

Division of Digital and Microprocessor Systems conducts research on:

  • Testing of digital systems
  • Design of digital systems with SPLD, CPLD, FPGA and PSoC arrangements
  • Design of ASIC systems and virtual components (VC)
  • Fast central units of programmable controllers (PLC) and their application
  • Digital methods of frequency conversion
  • Laboratory and industrial systems for control and data acquisition
  • Multiprocessor and embedded systems
  • Methods of distracted design and designing tools

 

Division of Telecommunications carries out research on:

  • Quantum cryptography and its application for improvement of safety of modern tele-informatic systems
  • Safety in local IP networks, including implementation and testing of new services in internet network
  • Optimization of hardware and programming construction of mobile systems
  • Optimization of digital data transfer systems
  • Application of digital speech conversion in telecommunications.

 

Scientific research of the Team of Microelectronics and Nanotechnology concentrates mainly on:

  • Amorphous resistive alloys for application in electronics and precise layered resistors
  • Silicon based diffuse structures obtained by spin coating of silicon glaze for the application of photovoltaics,
  • Nanostructure of transparent conductive oxides for application in photovoltaics and gas sensor systems
  • Semiconductor substrates for application in microelectronics.

Institute of Informatics

Scientific work of the Institute of Informatics focuses on basic, developing and applied research into important theoretical, programming and hardware problems, which determine the directions of development of computer science.

Fields of study and specific topics investigated at the Institute of Informatics:

  • Algorithms – including: adaptive and generic algorithms, minimal perfect hashing, optimization, bit-parallel, string and sequence algorithms, as well as the longest common subsequence and related problems;
  • Artificial intelligence, methods, techniques and application – including: ant colony programming, artificial neutral networks, classifiers (feature extraction for pattern recognition), computational intelligence and aspects of fuzzy reasoning systems, fuzzy reasoning based on fuzzy truth value, genetic algorithms, evolutionary computing and programming, rough sets, fuzzy-neutral networks (learning methods  efficiency improvement), multi-sensor data fusion and neuro-fuzzy systems, rough-neuro classifiers, rule induction, heuristic training methods for fuzzy models, rule and rule set quality measures, selection of rough set relative value reduction, simulated annealing, the exlWO metaheuristic (expanded Invasive Weed Optimization), evolutionary algorithms and training set selection;

  • Modelling and simulations – including: branching processes and coalescence distribution, digital modelling, discrete event system modelling with OMNet++ environment, discrete-event simulation, discrete mathematics in computer simulation, dynamic continuous system modelling in Metlab and .NET, new technologies in computer network modelling, numerical methods, queueing systems and active queue management, solution of parameter optimization tasks using Metlab-Simulink environment, system and network modelling using SimEvents package, traffic modelling, weather simulation and rendering models;

  • Parallel and distributed computing – including: tools and practices simplifying efficient parallel programming, parallel algorithms for solving complex transportation problems and simulated annealing for vehicle routing problem with time frames;
  • Signal processing – including: algorithms of property extraction from ultrasonic signals, analysis and processing of medical signals, bar codes, de-noising algorithms, digital geometry processing, discrete wavelet transformation, eye movement processing, image processing and recognition, multimedia data, nonlinear time series analysis, speech and audio processing and storage;
  • Software engineering – including: customization of CASE tools for development processes, IT project management, development and organization of open-source projects, methods and tools for automation of software testing, multilayer software architecture, software visualization, source code processing tools, translation theory, user interface design, using frameworks for effective programming;
