Asphalt Pavements: Designing a More Resilient and Sustainable Future

by

Benjamin Bowers, Ph.D., P.E.

1 Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, USA

Summary:

Auburn University is home to the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), one of the leading centers in the world with respect to asphalt pavement research. This presentation will focus on research conducted through NCAT and Auburn’s Highway Research Center to achieve more sustainable and resilient pavements. The two main topics will be cold recycling and full depth reclamation, the art of recycling 100% of the existing pavement into a new pavement, and adaptation methods for existing pavements to make them more resilient to climatic disruptions (e.g., flooding and sea level rise).

Bio-note:

Benjamin Bowers, Ph.D., P.E. is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Auburn University and a registered Professional Engineer in Virginia. Bowers' research is focused predominantly on asphalt materials and pavement geotechnics, with special attention paid to sustainable, resilient and cost-effective techniques. His passion for pavement materials is fueled by the marriage of his original enthusiasm for geotechnical engineering and a desire to contribute to a sustainable built environment. Drawing on inspiration from McDonough and Braungart's hallmark book, Cradle to Cradle, Bowers sees asphalt as an opportunity to create a truly circular product within our infrastructure landscape. Bowers is also an expert on resilient infrastructure, working on numerous projects centered around how to adapt infrastructure assets to combat climate-related disruptions.
