Bio-notes:

Barbara Klemczak is a Professor in the Department of Structural Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland.
She received her PhD and DSc in numerical modeling of early-age massive concrete structures. Her research interests include modeling and experimental investigation of thermal and shrinkage effects in concrete structures at early ages.
Agnieszka Jędrzejewska is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Structural Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland.
She received her PhD in numerical modeling of reinforced concrete wall-on-slab structures at early-age. Her research interests focus on restraint-induced cracking in reinforced concrete structures. She is an affiliate member of RILEM – a current member of the TC 287-CCS (Early age and long-term cracking of RC structures).
Aneta Żmij is a Research Assistant in the Department of Structural Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland.
Her research interests comprise the numerical and experimental study of concrete at early ages regarding hygro-thermo-mechanical behavior. She holds a PhD in the field of numerical analysis of massive foundation slabs behavior at early age.

Summary:

The necessity to consider early-age thermal-shrinkage effects in the design of mass concrete structures is posed by the cracking often observed in the first days after casting. That is why a realistic estimation of early-age thermal-shrinkage loads and induced stresses is essential in engineering science and in practice.
The early-age behavior of mass concrete structures and the specific character of thermal-shrinkage stresses will be presented with the reference to the wall-on-slab structures and foundation slabs. Analytic and numerical models to predict thermal-shrinkage stress development and cracking risk in early-age concrete in such structures will be discussed. The focus will be paid to essential aspects in FE analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior of mass structures as well the reliability of the analytic approaches. The original numerical and analytic model for analysis of early-age concrete developed in SUT will be presented.
Current work on early-age concrete carried out at SUT will be summarized.
