Silesian University of Technology inaugurated new academic year

For the 74th time, the ceremonial "Gaudeamus Igitur" sounded at the Silesian University of Technology. Thus, the academic year 2018/2019 was officially inaugurated. The ceremony with the participation of the university authorities, invited guests, employees and students took place today in the Education and Congress Center.

In the inaugural speech, the rector prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk emphasized that the commencing academic year will be a breakthrough for all Polish universities, including the Silesian University of Technology. - Yesterday, the new Act on Higher Education and Science entered into force, so called the Constitution for Science, which will significantly change higher education. The main goal of the new act is to create the best conditions for the development of Polish science, as well as to educate the staff of the future. “We treat the reform of higher education as an opportunity for the Silesian University of Technology. We intend to use it to the limits.”- emphasized Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk.

During the solemn inauguration of the academic year, one of the most important moments is matriculation, i.e. the admission of new students to the academic community. This year, 6 666 students in 56 fields of study have begun education within the walls of our Alma Mater. Rector of the Silesian University of Technology in his speech has also addressed them. – “I would like our university to become a place of development for you in all aspects of life - intellectual, spiritual, sports or cultural. I am glad that you have trusted us and have chosen the Silesian University of Technology as a place where you will gain knowledge and skills that will allow you to fulfill your dreams and gain a profession that will give you satisfaction and stability in life.” - said Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk.

The commencement of the academic year created also an opportunity to award the best graduates of the last academic year with Omnium Studiosorum Optimo medals.

For the first time, the Award of the Social Council of the Silesian University of Technology was awarded for interdisciplinary and social involvement in scientific work. In the employee category, the awards were granted to PhD Eng. Katarzyna Harężlak and PhD Eng. Paweł Kasprowski for the contribution to the promotion of the university through research on the use of the movement of the eye to communicate. In student category - members of the SKN PolSl Racing scientific club  were awarded for the contribution to the promotion of the university.

Traditional inaugural lecture, titled: "From grants to repayable instruments, which is how to finance innovations" was given by Professor Maciej Chorowski, director of the National Center for Research and Development. The professor addressed also students by saying:

- “Do not be afraid to think in such a way that you immediately jump over those barriers which are still ahead of our generation. The prize will be for those who try to go beyond the paradigm” - summed up the director of the National Center for Research and Development.
