Establishment of The Polish-German Center for Hybrid Lightweight Structures

Experts from Germany and Poland, including the Silesian University of Technology, will jointly conduct research on new materials and hybrid constructions. The ceremonial signing of the agreement on the establishment of the Polish-German Center for Hybrid Lightweight Structures was held on 17 May at the City Hall in Gliwice.

The agreement, resulting from the letter of intent signed in August last year, was concluded between the Silesian University of Technology, the city of Gliwice, the Katowice Special Economic Zone, the Federation of Aviation Companies "Bielsko" (coordinator of the Silesian Aviation Cluster), the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology of the

Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), and the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg.

Cooperation between representatives from the area of science, industry and self-government from Poland and Germany is aimed primarily at the development of modern technologies for the design of lightweight constructions as well as education in this field. The establishment of the Center is a response to the expectations of modern industry regarding the development of innovative material technologies and the rapid commercialization of research results.

- Material engineering is one of the pillars of civilization development. This is both about the development of new materials, as well as their application in the design of new systems, in order to reduce the mass of the construction while increasing their strength. It turns out that through appropriate technological treatment and the appropriate shape of the structure, we are able to obtain much better strength parameters than in the case of elements made of solid material. That is why hybrid constructions are increasingly used in the high-tech industry, especially in the automotive or aerospace industries - explains the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

At the Silesian University of Technology for several years, research has been carried out on homogeneous as well as hybrid and composite materials, used for constructing lightweight constructions. The establishment of the Polish-German Center for Hybrid Lightweight Structures and even closer cooperation with the Center's partners will undoubtedly help these activities to intensify.
