Changes in the operation of the University from 28 December 2020 to 17 January 2021

Due to the epidemic situation and current restrictions at the Silesian University of Technology, the restriction on leaving student and teacher residence halls (dormitories) has been introduced. The principles for the operation of universities in Poland are also specified in the new communique of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of 22 December 2020.

According to Ordinance No 313/2020 of the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology of 23 December 2020, there is a restriction on leaving student and teacher residence halls (dormitories) of the Silesian University of Technology by the residents in the period from 31 December 2020 – beginning at 7.00 p.m. to 1 January 2021 – until 6.00 a.m.. However, it does not apply to residents who need to perform their official, professional or business activities. It also does not apply to those who need to meet their basic everyday needs.

New restrictions apply in Poland from 28 December 2020 to 17 January 2021. They were introduced under the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 21 December 2020 on the establishment of certain restrictions, orders and bans with reference to the state of epidemic (Journal of Laws of 2020, item 2316).

Detailed guidelines for universities are presented in the communique on the website of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The activities of the university will be carried out in the light of the existing arrangements, allowing, possibility of conducting classes in a face-to-face mode. In this respect, decisions for the Silesian University of Technology are made by its authorities, taking into account safety rules and guidelines set out by the Ministry and sanitary and epidemiological services. The communique explains that, in accordance with the provisions of the Regulation of the Council of Ministers, classes conducted in the premises of the university are not treated as gatherings, events or meetings and thus are not subject to restrictions on the admissible number of participants.

We would also like to remind that there is a  possibility of using the library collections having complied with specific rules (limiting the number of people to 1 person per 15 m2 – excluding librarians).

The communique, however, introduces changes in the use of swimming pools, aqua parks, gyms, clubs and fitness centres. From 28 December 2020 and 17 January 2021, students will not be able to visit these facilities as part of classes at the university.

Student ID cards, PhD student and academic teacher ID cards remain valid with no further need to confirm this fact at the university.
