On 28 April 2020, the Rector's election for the term 2020-2024 was held at the Silesian University of Technology. One candidate was nominated for the post of rector –Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk PhD, DSc, the current Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, who has been performing this function since 2016.
298 electors from among 300 entitled to vote, took part in the election. The minimum number of valid votes needed for the election was 150. For Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk voted 252 people; among all votes there were 21 abstentions and 25 against. Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk is the 17th Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, elected for this function for the second time! The term of office will last from 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2024.
For the first time in the University's history, due to the epidemic in Poland, the elections were conducted remotely, online.
The first words after the announcement of the election’s results, Rector - elect addressed to the Academic Community of the Silesian University of Technology. - The term of office 2016-2020 passed in the atmosphere of changes in the higher education system, and at the end of this period the disorder in the functioning of the University was introduced by the epidemic. However, I am an optimist. The Academic Community of the Silesian University of Technology has proven its worth in these difficult times. We have achieved a lot, thanks to hard work and good cooperation. This is our joint success. Let's respect the fruits of this success and use them to build further prestige of the Silesian University of Technology. I would like to thank the College of Electors for all your participation in the election of the rector of the Silesian University of Technology. I would like to thank very much the University Electoral Commission and all those involved in the elections, because it was an unusualelection. All procedures were new and we had to learn everything again. This work was done very well. I invite you to cooperate and build the prestige of the Silesian University of Technology. The 2020-2024 term will be a continuation of the work started at the Silesian University of Technology in 2016-2020. - The decision to run for the second term of office was caused by the fact that I started a certain process and I would like to finish it, so that the effects of our activities would benefit the Silesian University of Technology. We obtained the status of a research university in the first competition, I would like to see the Silesian University of Technology in the next one, among the group of eight universities, that have the status of a research university.
The rector-elect also mentioned how the upcoming term will differ from the passingone. - First of all, changes that were necessary to implement and which resulted, inter alia, from the new Law on Higher Education and Science, were introduced at the turn of 2019 and 2020, so we will now optimize the functioning of the University of Technology within the scope implemented in the University. We will improve our didactic process and offer, we will also strive for the international recognition. These are our main tasks for the next term, and the full implementation of the " Excellence Initiative- Research University" programme - he said.
One of the Rector Arkadiusz Mężyk’s greatest achievements in the passing term includes undoubtedly the introduction of the Silesian University of Technology to the elite group of 10 research universities in Poland and the reorganization of the University in accordance with the new Law on Higher Education and Science of 2018. In addition: ensuring the University's place at the forefront of Polish technical universities; launching 30 quality programmes; internal communication, e.g. extensive consultation of the most important documents with members of the academic community, as well as the "University close to everyone" programme; nearly 800 grants worth PLN 3 million; trainings and courses for almost 500 employees; transparent employment policy and choice of career path; increasing the attractiveness of education and the value of the diploma of the Silesian University of Technology; close cooperation of the University with the socio-economic environment and commercialization of research and education.
- The most important task for the university's management staff was to ensure the Silesian University of Technology a place at the forefront of Polish academic universities, and the results of the actions taken exceeded our expectations. This proves the huge development potential of our Academic Community. The Silesian University of Technology was included in the prestigious group of 10 best academic universities - winners of the "Initiative of Excellence - Research University" competition. This huge success of the entire Community is not an accident but the result of hard work, working out a modern university development plan and a well thought-out concept of research and education development. A very good result in 2019 gives us a strong basis for undertaking investment activities in the coming term and enables the development of the Silesian University of Technology in the coming years - says Rector, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk.
In addition to plans for the future, it is necessary to face the problems of everyday life and combat the effects of the coronavirus epidemic. - Due to the current situation, this became an unpredicted part of my election programme, which I had prepared earlier this year. In this regard, the priority for me and the University authorities is to ensure security for the members of the Academic Community at the Silesian University of Technology. Ensuring stability of processes at the University is crucial. This is an extremely important issue, especially in connection with the economic situation not only in the country, but also all over the world, caused by the suspension of operations of most companies and business units - explains Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk. As he ensures, solutions will be developed on an ongoing basis, and current, demanding conditions create new spaces for development. - This is the right moment to establish new contacts in cooperation with the socio-economic environment, join in research and development, scientific processes aimed at eliminating the effects of the epidemic - he points out, referring to the effective area of cooperation between science and business, implemented at the Silesian University of Technology recently also as part of the "University of Technology against epidemic" campaign.
Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk PhD, DSc was born in 1962 in Wodzisław Śląski. The Rector of the Silesian University of Technology in 2016-2020 and 2020-2024 terms; Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 2012-2016. He obtained the title of doctor in 1994, habilitated doctor in 2002, professor in 2007.
His scientific achievements include over 180 scientific publications in scientific journals and conference materials at home and abroad, including 6 scientific monographs and 2 scripts. Co-author of 18 patents and 2 industrial designs, and promoter of 13 completed doctoral dissertations. 27 reviews of doctoral dissertations, 15 reviews in habilitation proceedings, 17 reviews in proceedings for conferring the title of professor and about 30 reviews of articles for foreign and international journals. Winner of many awards and distinctions, including Golden Honorary Badge of the Polish Chamber of Commerce (2019), Platinum Laurel 'Science and Innovation' RIG in Katowice (2018); he also received the Gold Medal of Merit for National Defence" of the Minister of National Defence (2015), the Gold Honorary Badge of Merit for the Silesian Voivodeship" (2013); he was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit in 2002, and recently the title of the Gliwice citizen of the year "Gliwicjusz 2019".
