Between 2-4 July our university delegation visited Lviv where, among others, they participated in the ceremony to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the execution of professors from Lviv universities on the Wulecki Hills. The delegation included: the Rector, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk; Vice Rector, Professor Janusz Kotowicz and the former Rector, Professor Wojciech Zieliński
The ceremony was attended by numerous delegations from Polish universities, such as: the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Cracow University of Technology, Rzeszów University of Technology, Lublin University of Technology and Poznań University of Technology.
The Ukrainian side was represented by the rectors of Lviv universities and representatives of Ukrainian authorities as well as clergy, headed by the Archbishop, Mieczysław Mokrzycki.
In his speech, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk referred to historical heritage of the Lviv Polytechnic National University: - Today we honour and commemorate noble representatives of pre-war Lviv universities, who tragically died. We express even greater respect keeping in mind that the main academic staff of the newly formed Silesian University of Technology in 1945 were the rescued professors of the University and Lviv Polytechnic, who decided to emigrate from their academic homeland - reminded Rector Mężyk, adding at the same time: - In the following years, many of them became professors of the Silesian University of Technology and the excellent professor personnel, maintaining great traditions of the Lviv Polytechnic. From the very beginning it was one of the strongest assets of our university, as of several other Polish universities, too.
At the end of the ceremony, the clergymen- Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lviv, Mieczysław Mokrzycki and the head of the Student Pastoral Care Centre of the Archdiocese of the Lviv Greek Catholic Church, Yuriy Ostapiuk, conducted a memorial service.
After the ceremony, the meeting of delegations from the Silesian University of Technology and the Wrocław University of Science and Technology with the Rector, Professor Yuri Bobalo took place. They discussed plans to jointly build a museum of Lviv professors on the Wulecki Hills as a symbol of tightening of cooperation and contacts between Poland and Ukraine, as well as further development of cooperation between universities.
